Anyone remotely considering a visit to Indonesia should pack this book up and keep it close as a travel companion. Other interested readers may include academics, students, or quasi- vested connoiseur of anything SE ASIA. The book/ novel is a candid narrative of a man's quest to find the last stretch of unreported road. So, so far from Denver's Larimer Street, 'Leavin Indonesia' picks the last stretch of road to explore. Good on the author for finding an unexplored place, time, people, etc. The road less traveled, with this addition to the dialogue, may become more so.
Leaving Indonesia is a book that offers readers something very special. At times it is a primer on the history and politics of Indonesia, which turn out to be far more interwoven with the history of Europe and the United States than most Westerners would ever guess. At other times it is the introduction to the Indonesian people that so many of us need, especially given our current climate of fear surrounding people from majority Muslim countries (of which Indonesia is the most populous). And of course it is a travelogue, a record of the experiences one young writer and cultural explorer had on his way across a country and social landscape as varied as any on Earth. Kevin Lee's desire to engage with the people and culture(s) of Indonesia is so strong that he says "yes" when many others would balk, and that affirmation gives him access and insight to aspects of Indonesia life that few other foreigners have experienced, let alone recorded and shared with those of us who would never know without him as our guide. Sometimes in talking about my own traveling experiences I mention to people that I have been to Indonesia before, and in the future whenever anyone asks me what it's like, I'll tell them about Leaving Indonesia, saying, "This book can tell you a lot better than I ever could."

The author engages us with a delightful mix of personal stories and intriguing historical matters of the country while laying out the landscape of a country from an everyman's perspective. This is a book that needed to be written and the author did it justice.
Really well written from the heart. This book isn't about the verbose, the language, and the style. It's about amazing real world experiences. Ones that bring people together....and for those who haven't experienced Indonesia....it gives an authentic depiction of an amazing and unique culture. Highly recommend, especially for travelers!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Leaving Indonesia. John's journey shows how a young person can experience the wonderful world we live in. He had a true adventure and his courage and determination makes for a great read. I passed it along to a neighbor of mine who has spent a lot of time in Indonesia and he loved it.

Very few travel guides have the ability to navigate between educational and witty story telling quite the way K. Lee does in Leaving Indonesia. Through Lee's thoughtful and unobtrusive tone, we begin our conversation about social and cultural norms across borders, religions, and colors to realize how amazing our own journey could be.
